Charles Henry Calhoun Brown diary, 1864

Diary kept by Boston, Mass. native Charles Henry Calhoun Brown from 15 March-27 September 1864, while serving as lieutenant and adjutant in the 7th Regiment of U.S. Colored Troops during the Civil War. Brown describes his unit's service in Jacksonville, Florida following the Union loss at the Battle of Olustee and near Fortress Monroe, Virginia. Entries record marching, skirmishes, destroying Confederate earthenworks, men killed or wounded, camp life, and daily activities. Included are sketches of tents and, on the last page of the diary, a drawing of the 7th U.S. Colored Troops camp at Jacksonville.
